Hiking clothing works as a system rather than a set of separate purchases. A base layer moves sweat away, a mid layer holds warmth when you stop, and a shell handles wind and rain. Get those three right and almost any conditions are manageable; get them wrong and no single expensive piece fixes it. The sections below cover what to wear on the trail and how the pieces work together.
Hiking bottoms need to stretch, dry quickly, and survive contact with rock and brush. Stretch-woven fabrics handle all three, which is why they are the standard for hiking pants rather than cotton or heavy canvas. Convertible and roll-up styles extend one pair across seasons. For summer miles and steep terrain, hiking shorts with a longer inseam stay comfortable under a pack’s hip belt. Shop hiking pants and hiking shorts.
The layer most hikers underestimate is the one that goes on when they stop moving. Body heat drops fast at a summit or a lunch break, so a packable insulated layer earns its weight on almost every trip. Over it, a rain shell handles weather; under it, a sun hoodie covers long exposed stretches without sunscreen. Synthetic insulation is the safer choice for multi-day trips, since it keeps insulating when it picks up moisture. Shop hiking jackets.
Backpacking changes the priorities to weight, packed size, and clothing that can be worn several days running. That means fewer pieces doing more jobs: a sun hoodie that doubles as a base layer, an insulated layer that compresses into a stuff sack, and one rain shell rather than a choice of them. Quick-drying fabrics matter more when there is no chance to launder anything, and odor resistance becomes a real consideration rather than a luxury.
Gaiters are the piece most hikers skip and then wish they had. They keep scree, mud, snow, and trail debris out of boots, which matters on loose terrain, in wet conditions, and on any trail with significant off-camber sections. Heights run from low trail-running models to full alpine coverage, matched to the terrain rather than personal preference. Outdoor Research built its reputation on gaiters, and the range covers every one of those uses. Shop hiking gaiters.

Three layers, adjusted to the forecast. A moisture-wicking base layer or sun shirt next to skin, an insulating mid layer for breaks and summits, and a wind or rain shell on top. Add hiking pants or shorts in a stretch-woven fabric and you are covered for most three-season conditions. The one rule that matters more than any product choice is avoiding cotton, which holds moisture and stops insulating once damp.
Weight and repeat wear. Day hiking clothing only has to work for a few hours, so comfort and weather protection drive the choice. Backpacking clothing has to be carried, packed small, and worn for several days without washing, which puts the emphasis on compressible insulation, quick-drying fabrics, and pieces that serve more than one purpose.
Synthetics and merino wool, for the same reason: both keep insulating and moving moisture when damp. Stretch-woven nylon is the standard for pants and shorts because it resists abrasion while allowing full range of motion. Cotton is the one to avoid in anything but hot, dry conditions, since it absorbs sweat, dries slowly, and pulls heat away from the body once wet.
The system stays the same; the weights change. In summer the emphasis moves to sun protection and ventilation, with a sun hoodie and shorts doing most of the work. In colder months the mid layer gets heavier, the shell becomes more important, and accessories like gloves and a warm hat matter more than any single garment. The base and shell layers themselves often carry across the whole year.
